The Schoen Greenhouse

Thanks to a generous donation from the Schoen Family in honor of Maddie Schoen, CISS was able to break ground on a state-of-the-art greenhouse, which features a HydroCycle Aquaponics System that produces a low-maintenance, self-sustaining source of tilapia and fresh lettuce.

In total, CISS’s farm has the capacity to harvest 5,000 pounds of produce each month, which is then sold to Big Grove, Food Bank of Iowa, Iowa Food Co-op, and DMARC. We also donate produce to Eat Greater DSM, and of course, to our own kitchen at Mulberry Street Café.

In the summer months, CISS offers forage-able landscaping and will also be developing a community garden club. If you’d like more information, please contact our Farm Manager Katherine at kklingensmith@centraliowashelter.org.
