Micki Baker is a drummer, which most people wouldn’t guess just by looking at her. Music is an important part of who she is and reflects her creativity, rhythm, and determination. During her time at CISS, Micki focused on making meaningful progress for herself while also encouraging others. She often tried to be a shoulder to lean on, offering support, hope, and reassurance to those around her during their own transitions.
If Micki’s life were a movie, she says the title would be How to Get an Apartment in 90 Days. The title is a playful nod to the length of an initial stay at CISS, but it also reflects a very real accomplishment. Within those 90 days, Micki successfully secured housing with the help of her client advocates. She credits them with supporting her transition, guiding her, and encouraging her to move forward.
While working toward her own goals, Micki also made it a priority to help others. She tried to support people who were navigating their own housing transitions, helping them build confidence, self-esteem, and hope for a better tomorrow. She understands how overwhelming change can be and wanted others to feel seen and capable.
What kept Micki going through this time was her strong faith in God and her determination to believe in herself. That combination gave her the strength to continue pushing forward, even on difficult days. Her resilience and belief in growth shaped both her journey and the way she showed up for others.
When it comes to her flower arrangement, Micki jokingly hopes that no one notices what she calls her “poor flower-making skills”. Instead, she hopes people see what she lovingly refers to as “scatter brain delight.” To her, the arrangement represents joy, individuality, and the belief that whoever takes it home will go on to have a great life, filled with possibility and unexpected beauty.
